Grade Level Course Information

6th GRADE

Sixth grade students begin the day in homeroom and travel with that same homeroom cohort through their four core academic classes 1st - 4th hours.  They end their day in exploratory classes 5th and 6th hours.

Regarding exploratory classes, sixth grade students have the option to enroll in Band for the year and/or in Choir first marking period only.  All sixth grade students are enrolled in a semester of Physical Education, whether or not they choose to participate in Band or Choir.  Non-band students will rotate through all exploratory classes at some point in the school year.

6th and 7th GRADE Exploratories

Our goal is to expose students to a wide-range of learning opportunities over the course of their three years at Petoskey Middle School.  In keeping with this philosophy, it is our practice to schedule 6th and 7th grade students in each of our exploratory class offerings at least once over those two years.  After their 6th grade year, we intentionally enroll students in the exploratory classes they have not taken previously, which typically applies to band or ac lab students.  This means that by 8th grade, all students will have experienced all exploratory class offerings.

7th GRADE

Seventh grade students begin the day in homeroom and finish the day with that same homeroom cohort in a 6th hour academic class taught by their homeroom teacher.  Other than homeroom and 6th hour, students are not scheduled in groups that travel together.  Seventh graders have two academic classes in the morning, 1st and 2nd hours, after which they attend their exploratory classes 3rd and 4th hours.  They end the day with the other two academic classes 5th and 6th hours.

Regarding exploratory classes, seventh grade students have the option to enroll in Band for the year and/or in Choir first semester only.  All seventh students are enrolled in a semester of Physical Education, whether or not they choose to participate in Band or Choir.  Non-band students will rotate through all exploratory classes at some point in the school year.

8th GRADE

Eighth grade students begin the day in homeroom, but then attend their elective classes 1st and 2nd hours.  Their academic classes take place 3rd - 6th hours.

Eighth graders select their elective classes (similar to exploratory classes, but by choice).  Eighth graders have the option to enroll in French I or Chamber Choir at the high school, and can choose more than one marking period of other classes such as PE, Art, and Industrial Arts, which offer different course content throughout the year.
