Applications to NHS are emailed to all 10th- and 11th-grade students who have an unweighted GPA of 3.60 or higher after the first semester of the school year during which the application is considered. Applications are typically sent in early February after GPAs have been recalculated to include first-semester grades. [View application here]
The four components of the application are as follows:
- Application. The candidate answers questions to introduce themselves and state their interest and reasons for applying.
- PHS Teacher Recommendations. 3 PHS Teachers confidentially evaluate students based on the pillars of NHS: Scholarship, Leadership, Character, & Service. Candidates are encouraged to request recommendations from teachers who know them best, but they may choose any past or present teacher at PHS.
- Community Recommendation. One person who knows the student outside of school evaluates the student based on the pillars of NHS. Candidates are encouraged to request recommendations from community members who can attest to their character and skills in a context outside of the classroom.
- Service Hours. All candidates for NHS are required to complete at least 10 hours of service to their community. Guidelines for qualifying hours are listed on the form.
Applications are typically due Mid-April, shortly after Spring Break.
Applications are evaluated by the NHS Faculty Council based on the pillars of Scholarship, Leadership, Character, & Service demonstrated by each candidates' Personal Statements within their applications, Service Hours Log, and PHS and Community Recommendations. All pieces of the application are holistically considered for each student. Per NHS Bylaws, decisions of induction are based on a majority vote of the Faculty Council.
Membership decisions are made in late April and are sent to student and guardian emails (which are provided by students as part of their application). Membership begins after the Induction Ceremony, which is typically held in early May.
