Hi: My name is Maggie Jakeway, the new school nurse. I’d like to take a minute and tell you about myself and what I can do to help you and your student(s). I have been a nurse for 15+ years in various roles; however, I am new to the school nurse setting. I see students at Ottawa and Sheridan Elementary schools and am employed through the Health Department of Northwest Michigan.
What is a school nurse?
As a school nurse, I help protect and promote student health, which positively influences their development and academic success. We are leaders that bridge healthcare and education, working with families to determine
care plans for short-term or ongoing health challenges.
What does a school nurse DO?
As a school nurse, I am committed to providing student care and treatment of
illnesses and minor injuries as well as chronic disease management. After making an assessment, I can safely administer limited over-the-counter medications with parent consent. I will maintain current student health information, teach basics of good hygiene, and encourage healthy food choices and disease prevention.
In a nutshell, in collaboration with parents and primary care providers, I help keep students healthy so they can stay in school as much as possible. Please note, I will be calling parents/guardians before I administer medication for the safety of your student. In order to receive services, students must have a signed parent/guardian consent form on file. Students without signed consent forms will not be seen after their first visit, when verbal consent is obtained OR in the case of a life or limb threatening emergency.
All interactions with students and parents are considered privileged and confidential.
Please complete the consent form, including the health history on the reverse side and return it to the school as soon as possible, if you would like me to see your student.
I’m looking forward to working with you and everyone in this great community. Feel free to call, leave a voicemail or email me anytime.
